Senior Sous Chef Jemelle Arlo Baarde led the charge clinching the gold medal in the highly competitive Creative Breakfast Challenge. His award winning dish, Tasmanian salmon sisig with creamy mashed potatoes, poached egg in mushroom broth and coriander, crispy fried spinach and squash flower showcased a harmonious blend of savory and umami flavors. Chef Baarde’s dedication to his craft is evident in his mantra, “The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today”.

Silver medals were awarded to Sous Chef Jessienor Paet, who impressed with his Pork chorizo with fried egg yolk, tinapa rice, and pomelo salad in the Creative Breakfast Challenge, and to Sous Chef Allan Mislos for his pasta entry, featuring Divella Rigatoni, Guanciale, Tomato and red pepper sauce and ricotta sage cream. 

The team’s collective excellence was further highlighted by nine bronze medals awarded across individual and team categories. Notable individual winners include Sous Chef Jonathan Bareza with recognition in the Plant Based Diet Meals, U.S Lamb, U.S. Beef, and U.S. Pork categories. Senior Sous Chef Jemelle Arlo Baarde was honored in the Poultry and Pasta categories. Commis 2 Chef Bryan Rosales was awarded for his entry in Plant Based Diet Meals, Chef de Partie John Robert Arevalo was recognized in the U.S. Lamb category, Chef de Partie Cherwin P. Torralba was awarded in the U.S. Pork category, and Sous Chef Allan Mislos was honored in the pasta category.

The Filipino Cuisine Challenge also saw success with Sous Chef Allan Mislos and Commis 2 Chef Jan Paul B. Apas delivering a delightful fusion of local flavors, featuring dishes like Balbacua na may ginabot, etag at pinuneg, Blatinao, sinangag sa adobong pusit na may kibitz, and Sinisig na manok at hipon na may bu-ow. Additionally, Commis 3 Chef Nilo R. Peñaverde Jr. and Commis 2 Chef Roldan Bayucan impressed the judges with their creation of Dinengdeng na may inihaw na hito, Sinangag na may bagoong sa gata at ensaladang manga, and Kare kareng buntot ng baka sa kalabasa at mani.

In the Dream Team Challenge, Senior Sous Chef Mario Abrio, Commis 1 Chef Sheena Jireh Echague, and Commis 2 Chef Mon Paolo Nogrado delivered a well-rounded three-course meal. The team served Pan seared scallops and ikura salmon with avocado, burnt corn puree, tomato and cucumber aspic, crispy caviar and creamy onion leeks sauce. This was followed by a main course of Stuffed pork loin roulade with roasted pumpkin risotto, caramelized onion and pommery mustard sauce, culminating in a decadent Chocolate apricot success cake.

Despite these efforts, the need for continued support remains crucial. In June 2024, 17.6% of Filipino families reported experiencing involuntary hunger or had nothing to eat at least once, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey. This is an increase from 14.2% in March 2024.

Hapag Movement and Project PEARLS call on the public to support its various fundraising activities as every contribution helps the organization move closer to its vision of a world where no child goes hungry.

The drama promises to be an action-packed suspense thriller with a very healthy dose of romance. Kim Ha Neul stars as Oh Wan Soo, a former world champion professional golfer who marries into a chaebol family and becomes a UN Goodwill Ambassador whose work threatens terrorist organizations and has her at their crosshairs. Jung Ji-Hoon plays a former policeman who becomes Wan Soo’s bodyguard, but he has an agenda of his own. From the first two episodes, while Wan Soo faces a threat from the outside, her biggest threat may come from her husband’s mother (Seo Yi Sook).

Like any press conference, the moderator invites each of the cast to come up on stage for photos and then asked the two leads, Kim Ha Neul and Jung Ji-Hoon to pose together. Immediately, you can see their chemistry playing off of each other when the moderator asks them to pose as their characters, and Rain immediately imitates a security detail, complete with gesturing towards his ear as if he was wearing an earpiece. The two laugh at the gesture but are able to get serious enough for one good shot.

From the get-go, you can see how comfortable they are with each other which plays off well onscreen as the passion between the two characters are already evident as early as episode one.

On the flipside, when Seo Yi Sook joins the two on stage, they were asked to make “fatal pose” and Rain opens his arms for a hug to Seo Yi Sook, who also laughs. The irony is at play here as it seems that Seo Yi Sook may play the main villain.

When it was time to answer questions from the press, the cast was joined by Park Hong-kyun. The first question was directed to the leads, and they were asked why they accepted to do ‘Red Swan.’ Kim Ha Neul opened up about how she had loved ‘The Bodyguard’ with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston so it was a chance to do her own version. But what really gripped her was how strong the script was. For Jung Ji Hoon, he had always wanted to work with director Park Hong Kyun and every time a project would surface, something always came up and the project never pushed through. So when this show was offered to him, he said yes immediately.

Director Park Hong Kyun is known for his action-packed style of directing and had always wanted to work with Rain in an action-led series. He knew what Rain could do as an action star and was very happy that Rain was always giving a lot of ideas in how to do certain action scenes. The two seemed like willing collaborators to make the show more thrilling. It also gives a glimpse of Rain’s experience and creative side. Jung Ji-Hoon is a very physical actor and likes to do his own stunts. “I like to be responsible for my action sequences,” he said. What shocked Park Hong Kyun, though, was Jung Ji-Hoon’s emotional strength. He was the last person cast for the drama and he was chosen because of his experience in action but his vulnerability became the show’s hidden strength.

“My character doesn’t have a lot of lines,” Jung Ji-Hoon said. “So, I have to work a lot with just how I look and I have to act with only my eyes.” Park Hong Kyun was amazed and was not expecting this side of Jung Ji-Hoon’s range as an actor. He also shared that Rain had worked closely with their consultant on how to properly project and come off like a real bodyguard and Rain said that part of it was having to speak with a “cool tone,” which he had observed from his research. The moderator then asked him if he could try speaking with his modulated voice and the actor asked for a moment and he fixed his posture and then, with a totally new tone of voice asked the audience to please support the drama.

For Kim Ha Neul, she watched a lot of Goodwill Ambassadors and tried to capture their grace and poise. And while she golfs in her leisure time, she had to really train hard as her character “was the best in the world” and she knew she couldn’t just fake it. For Jung Gyu-woon, who plays the husband of Kim Ha Neul, he wanted to steer away from a stereotypical chaebol heir. While his character is problematic, he pushed for the character to be truly in love with Oh Wan Soo so that there would be a tortured nuance to the character. “He’s a complex character,” he said, “And I want to show him struggling that his wife, which he loves so much, has so much friction with his mother.”

On the other hand, Ki Eun Se sees her character as a sort of comic relief. From the first two episodes, she comes off as a family friend, sometimes a nanny to On Wan Soo’s child but she has her own agenda and it’s to take Jung Gyu-woon for her own. “Her story is the one that breaks all the tension,” she says, laughing. 

With the many genres that are playing out in ‘Red Swan,’ the two leads were asked what approached did they focus on the most and while Kim Ha Neul felt that her character was more focused on the threats to her life, that as an actress, she focused on the mystery and the intrigue – the suspense genre that pushes the show’s plot forward – but for Rain, he felt that he wanted to focus more on the romance aspect of the story. Because he wanted to put the relationship of Oh Wan Soo and her bodyguard at the center, he opted to say the lines as written and to avoid from doing improvisations to help Kim Ha Neul work with him for their passionate scenes.With the show’s pedigree of great talent involved and the sort of camaraderie that they projected during this press conference; ‘Red Swan’ may be a show to watch out for on Disney+.

‘Changes Over Time’ is a four track EP that lures the listener into a labyrinth of sound that traverses through themes of time. Orchestral elements and intoxicating rhythms are delicately coalesced into the electronic components of the songs to compliment artist Nicole Asensio’s poetic propensity and meandering melodies. All the tracks were mixed and mastered in Dolby Atmos by Waxiefied Sound Production.

“This EP is a cocktail of different styles from me and Nicole’s favourite eras of music.  There are elements from the 80s, acid jazz influences from the early 90s, neo-soul influences from the mid 90s and a melding of 70s disco and modern house/electronic. The Dilla swing feel is present throughout the EP but expressed through the different sonic platforms each of these eras of music have.” – Gabe Dandan

“We wrote the initial demos during a lock-in session in my home, and later brought them into the the Dolby Atmos equipped production suite “Waxiefied Sound Production.”it was a tireless three day process of writing and producing on the fly, but the spontaneity of our process for this EP is what gave these songs their unique charm and sound.”  –Nicole

Welcome to the dream… nothing is what it seems.

 “Amused” is a tune reminiscent of a smooth cocktail served over the plush velvet seats of a swanky bar. The instrumentation is robust yet laid back, opening with a full orchestra sound and slipping into a slow groove, full horns section. Much of the style is inspired by 80’s soul-r&b. Nicole’s uniquely textured vocal and a section of female backups garnish the track with sensual subtleties.

“Hours into our session, Gabe continued to stack tracks as I was simultaneously writing words to match them. I already had a melody in my head for the next song, but our first couple attempts to match ideas weren’t jiving just yet. After an ear-break we decided to jump into the next song “Where We’re Meant to Be” a track that is inspired by accepting our circumstances because we cannot chase, change or turn back time. Despite the heavy connotation of this topic, I wanted to keep the vibe light, warm and summery. Lyrically, the song is about accepting that everything happens at the right time and there is nothing one can do to alter that, after all, We still can choose to count the blessings and live in the moment when everything else seems out of sync. –Nicole

The second track “Where We’re Meant to Be” blends hints of acid jazz and soul into a spirited and upbeat brew. Percussive elements and classic jazz melodies meld into modern elements and production styles creating a bounty of musical flavours.

The third track “Mirages” was inspired by a recent experience we had in Siargao island. While skimming the streets, driving a dusty motorbike on a sweltering hot day, the roads began to fade into a silver haze, mirages of water shone on the path and as we got closer they would disappear. The track opens with exotic string and wind instruments such as a koto and lute, as the arrangement rises to a hilt, it suddenly plunges into a dark beat reminiscent of trudging footsteps on desert sand. I kept the low and slow on this track, to give the ear a different place to go. I was thrilled to have Gabe finally share a little bit of his vocals on this track too! It took quite a bit of coaxing as he can be extremely shy about singing, but I am glad he finally decided to come out of his shell and share it on this EP.” – Nicole

Time in motion it won’t stop for no one…

“The message of this EP is about how ephemeral our lives are. We cannot escape the movement of time and the fact that everything and everyone around us changes as well. These four songs are our way of expressing how we should grow and evolve without losing what it truly good and beautiful about us. I feel the music reflects the changes over time because of how unconventional the song forms are with the combination of different genres plus all of the abrupt sonic changes that would intentionally throw listeners off yet reel them in again a few seconds later.” – Gabe

The fourth and final track which is also the EP title “Changes over Time” is comprised of four parts or “seasons” within itself. As the title suggests, the track has multiple shifts in tempo and feel. The song opens with 2000’s influenced house beats, string elements and effervescent vocals, then descends into slow, intimate musings of sadness over a sultry groove, it then picks up again and shape-shifts with the help of electronic elements such as vocoders and synths, the cycle repeats before fading into a gospel choir influenced outro. Truly a sonic experiment reminiscent of the many changes that come as we sift through sands of time.

“We retained a lot of elements from our first writing session such as the bass, keys and some of the synths. We then headed to onQ studios where we got to work with music stalwart Mr. Marvin Querido who tracked our live sessions with drummer Randall Enriquez and a horn section spearheaded by Michael Guevarra. Nicole and I recorded lead vocals and backup vocals at Waxiefied Sound Production Dolby Atmos suite. We blended in vocals from industry friends Mel Torre, Sarah Holmes and Dominic Dimagmaliw. After most stems were in place, singer-songwriter Kevin Yadao added some more smooth backups to the mix. One of the highlights of working on this EP is guesting L.A. based world renowned trumpet player Aaron Janik, who plays alongside some of the greatest musical acts in the international scene. The entire team was comprised of titans in their own right, and we were honoured to work with each player. Finally, I added guitar as a finishing touch. We brought to Waxie Joaquin to mix and master because of his expertise and understanding for this multi-genre type of music. Waxie, Nicole and I would stay up everyday till 5 in the morning working on the immersive experience and getting everything to its optimal sound across the board. After Mastering was done, Jiggs Hermano did the quality control and after a couple of hours of careful listening we all agreed it was ready and sent it out for distribution through Warner Music Philippines.” – Gabe

The tandem paints a sonic landscape that is both peculiar and familiar in the same deep breath. Through the shifts in tempo, rhythm and language from English to Filipino, there remains two common threads—homage to soul music and an earnest articulation of words from the soul.

‘Patintero sa Ayala Avenue’ is a play written by Rafael Jimenez, his thesis for his degree in Theater from Mint and it is a powerhouse of emotions, almost entirely a monologue by its lead character, simply known as The Boy, except for a few scenes with The Boy’s 10-year-old sister Nora. The Boy is a high school student in a prestigious boarding school in Manila, but he is failing four out of his five subjects and faces expulsion. It begins pretty much with Zoe de Ocampo talking to someone named Mike. “Dear Mike” he starts, almost like he’s writing a letter. He talks about his current predicament and with a light change, he goes from an internal monologue into a real-world conversation – whether it’s his problematic roommate or the principal of his school – and we discover that The Boy is not in a good place.

He shares his observations about the bullies of his school and the effects it has on other students – one extreme case follows that someone tried to take his life – and what’s implied but never spoken out until much later is how he has a lot of issues with his parents, most especially his father, who is a director. It’s so bad that he decides to sneak out of the boarding house (it involves bribery) and walking around Poblacion. He shares his candid views about the red-light district that is Burgos street, mentioning more than once the number of foreigners (white folk) with a Filipina in their arms. He tries to stay the night at the hotel in front of Filling Station but can’t get a room because he’s underage and meets a woman who he tries to flirt with until he discovers she’s a sex worker. We follow The Boy through his traipse around Makati, constantly asking about where the Christmas lighting decor that adorn Ayala Avenue go when the Christmas season is over, while telling Mike about all his angers and frustrations about the world. Very quickly, we discover that The Boy is also unreliable narrator, because even his musings to Mike are also filtered by his own need to look like he’s in the right.

The Boy discusses family relations, memories of a happier, simple past, and his thoughts about suicide or running away to Baguio. We seem date girls and screw that up because he’s kind of misogynistic and overall toxic and what we get is a snapshot of the dark, inner world of the privileged youth. 

What makes it hard to bear is while any suffering should be dealt with sympathy and empathy, The Boy is not without options. He’s wealthy. Who else gets to run away and tries to book a room at a hotel so he can spend the night. This is a kid who has run away from home and will book a Grab to go from Ayala Triangle to Glorietta. He complains that all Filipino movies are bad (he uses harsher terms than that) and all because his dad is a film director and he hates his dad. When he is with his guy friends, he takes on the posture of the toxic male and it bleeds into his dealings with the girls that he likes.

For one hour, all of the first act, we have to follow this boy’s misadventures and its hard to empathize when he has so many options that are available to him. There’s even a moment when he talks to a pares vendor and The Boy becomes the vendor, all hunched, smoking a cigarette, and talking about how life doesn’t mean anything because it’s all going to end. The vendor is the only other character The Boy interacts with that The Boy inhabits and voices out and this adds an extra layer of privilege that comes from the playwright and not just the character. These vendors who work under the neon lights of Burgos are some of the nicest, friendliest people I’ve come to know because I live in Poblacion. The working class don’t think about the world ending, they live in the moment. They are happy that they can work, that they can provide. They are the first to tell us stories about the things they’ve seen (and they’ve seen plenty) and it’s what I cannot stand about poverty porn because most of the working class, and even lower class know how to have fun, to laugh, and to take each day on its own merits.

Everything comes together by the second act, when the specifics of The Boy’s backstory lay out everything that the first act was just symptoms of his own lashing out. But by that point, I’m no longer on his side, and this play needs us to be on his side. He’s someone who needs a friend, an older figure (definitely parental) but there’s no one there. The audience can become that person, the only one who can care about him, but we don’t. The play didn’t give us that option. So, when we finally see him interact with his sister, Nora, the only person he loves and possibly loves him back, it comes too late for the audience to imbibe the message that the play tries to give.

What makes it a powerful debut, nonetheless, is that it felt very authentic to the milieu and the sensibilities of the character. The references, the use of language: all of these were unapologetically cued in to its zeitgeist and that’s not an easy thing to do. It’s a demanding work for both the audience and its cast. The playwright loves his character and while there’s nothing wrong about writing about privileged people, the writing must open itself up to larger perspectives that can make it inclusive to a larger audience who will not share these experiences. 

Zoe de Ocampo is a promising powerhouse, who is able to capture and engage the audience all by his lonesome up on that stage. I think what he needs is more experience as the demanding play asks him to immediately shift from internal monologue (his letters to Mike) to the one-man dialogue with characters in the play (who are not present). There are nuances and shifts that need to be more refined because it’s so subtle that the delivery can come across as monotone through the whole play. The way he talks to the sex worker should be different from when he talks to his guy friends, his abusive rommate, or a pares vendor in Burgos. It’s most prominent when he speaks to Nora, played effectively by Teia Contreras. That’s where the shift becomes really clear. With more experience – both on stage and off stage – De Ocampo is going to do very exciting things for Philippine theater.

‘Patinteto sa Ayala Avenue’ is a strong debut, regardless of what I think about its politics, and brings in a fresh new voice in Philippine Theater in English. Most original Filiipno plays I’ve seen are in Filipino and most English plays I’ve caught are revivals of Western work. New voices like these should be heard and these are important steps to their growth. With all the success recent theater productions have been getting, ‘Patintero sa Ayala Avenue’ is proof that Philippine theater is blooming.

She is currently appearing as Edith and Rose in the new Ben&Ben Musical, One More Chance. Carla celebrates her 30^th year in the industry.

Among her most notable roles include Lily Dela Rosa in Binondo, a Tsinoy musical at the Theatre Solaire, Katherine Lyons in the critically acclaimed musical Dani Girl, Kapitana Mary Jane in Rak of Aegis, and the highly coveted role of Fosca in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion. More recently, she has performed at The Dream is a Wish Disney Orchestra Concert in Genting Malaysia.

TANYA MANALANG-ATADERO

One of the most accomplished actresses on the musical theatre stage, Tanya Manalang-Atadero’s skills and talent have brought her the world over from New Manila, Quezon City, to the West End of London. Within her studded repertoire include roles such as Kim  in the West End revival of Miss Saigon, Liesl Von Trapp in the classic musical The Sound of Music, Carla in the Atlantis Production of In The Heights, Stacy King in All Out of Love, and Aileen in PETA Theater’s fifth season of Rak of Aegis, the latter two roles for which she had won Aliw Awards and GEMS Awards Best Actress in Musical, respectively. She is also currently part of the touring singing group The Jet Theaters, performing for events across Asia.

For all their innate breeziness, watercolors can be a challenge to create for beginners. The unpredictable nature of water and pigments, however, can lead to surprising and beautiful effects.

The Philippine Guild of Watercolorists (PGW) is a group established in 2016 whose aim is to enable its members to connect with the art community by showcasing their talent with watercolors. The guild currently has over 200 official members and 7.8 thousand followers on Facebook, and 27.6K reach on their page.

From April 16 to 30, the PWG is holding “Our Stories in Color,” a two-week exhibit of watercolors at ARTablado at Robinsons Galleria. Artworks to be featured include those created by some of its members as well as those by premier watercolor artists namely Erwin Mallari, Richard Romeo, JC Vargas, Dan Macapugay and Ton Ador.

Mallari has been painting watercolors for just over a decade but already has a catalog of realistic paintings honed by his years as a photographer. In 2012, he was a semi-finalist in the Metrobank Art & Design Excellency competition, and in 2014 he was awarded as one of the five grand prize winners of the Kulay sa Tubig watercolor competition.

An architect by profession, Romeo was one of five grand prize winners at Kulay sa Tubig in 2020 where his painting, “A National Treasure”, and “A Golden Hour in Basilan” in 2022, caught the eye of the jurors. Macapugay was also a grand prize winner at the same competition with his painting “Ina” that was based on a photo taken by a friend. He was drawn to the image because it reminded Macapugay of his grandmother.

Vargas is one who works quickly, as one does when working with watercolors. Earlier this year, he was one of the featured artists at a live watercolor painting session held in another mall. Ador bagged the grand prize at the first Sihag Cebu Watercolor competition held four years ago, and Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) in watermedia category in 2022.

The works of these five awarded artists will be showcased alongside pieces by 15 members of the PGW. Of the 37 members who submitted watercolor paintings on full sheets for consideration, theirs were the ones chosen by the jurors.

The ongoing ARTablado exhibit is noteworthy as it is only the first where all the pieces on display are watercolors. Visitors to the exhibit will find that the PGW is a home for watercolor artists where everyone is welcome no matter what their skill level may be.

The founding members headed by Karen Sioson have cemented PGW’s aim and the succeeding officers continue to stand strong by these: “We aim to build awareness, interest, and appreciation for the watercolor art and discover, hone, and support local talent through art-related 4Es: education, events, exposure, and experiences,” “One of our promises is to provide the network and platform for artistic exchange and collaboration.”

Education comes in the form of opportunities for its members to learn and master their craft via workshops, demos and other activities. Through events, live or digital, members will get to celebrate and express love for watercolors and the arts. Exposure will build awareness by promoting the exceptional talent of Filipino watercolorists through shows and other activities. Experiences in the form of plein air sessions and on-the-spot challenges will further challenge and improve the skills of its members.

There have only been a few juried exhibitions since PGW was established so “Our Stories in Watercolor” is one that is certainly worth viewing. The list of participating artists include Joseph Balderas, Aileen Barreiro, Aileen Cura, Dinna delos Reyes, Rigie Fernandez, Joanne Cariaso-Gacayan, Alice Atienza-Lee, Kyle Fortu-Legaspi, Judy Liuson, Sarah Liuson-Ongsun, Bids Llorin-Luna, Cher Cabula-Mendoza, Drake Pagulayan, Lorraine Panelo and Eduardo Solana Jr.

The jurors included John Cogley, president of Daniel Smith Artists Materials; Dino Pajao, an honorary member of PGW, a multi-awarded watercolor artist and one of the few Filipino members of the the Singapore Watercolor Society; and Iris Babao-Uy who is also an honorary member of PGW, one of the most sought after multi-media workshop instructors in Manila.

Joanne Cariaso-Gacayan, the current President of PGW, expressed, “We partnered with ARTablado for this exhibition because, in addition to their professionalism, we believe that with the gallery’s support, we can make watercolor painting more accessible to beginners and artists of all levels.”

Walk-ins and prospective buyers can look forward to a showcase of watercolor works not just by the members but by guest artists as well. Auxiliary activities include live painting sessions during the exhibit period to further show the public how members of the guild paint in various watercolor styles.

Metawin Opas-iamkajorn is playing Parin, a very wealthy Thai young businessman who heads to Hong Kong in search of his mother. There he runs into Iris, played by Janella Salvador. She’s working at the hotel he is staying in and as his wealthy father has left instructions for the staff to take care of him, Iris ends up working overtime to address all Parin’s needs, including helping him find his mother. In the process, they get close and discover that their feelings have grown from purely professional to something much more.

The first misfire in this film is its lack of a cohesive story. The first act revolves all around Parin’s search for his mom. While he employs the help of Iris, which lays the foundation for the love story to happen after, the goal and direction is finding the mom. Surprisingly, this is resolved faster than expected, switching the entire movie’s direction on the second act to the sudden twist of Parin and Iris dropping everything to start working together as business partners running a small cafe in a provincial, coastal area of Hong Kong while living together. But the third act is a completely different movie altogether that involves one of the character’s hidden secrets that is unconvincingly set up in act one but is never any visible motivating factor until it is revealed in the final act that turns the movie over its head again.

These multiple directions made the film feel like three different movies and never gave us any chance to really get to know the characters well or see their relationship grow into the love story that the second act wanted us to fall in love with. Bernardo fills the first act with Parin’s desperation to find his mother but also peppers the scenes with comedic moments of Iris and Parin verbally sparring or Iris taking care of a drunk Parin to set us up for the love story. Unfortunately, there’s no real chemistry happening between the two leads and the moment Parin meets his mom, the lessons he learns there holds no real learning for the character as it makes no real visible change to his life.

After an hour, as Parin and Iris start to build their little business together, I realise I didn’t know these characters at all. Parin left home to find his mom and it is implied that he ran a business in Thailand (and that it failed) and that he is the youngest son of a wealthy family, but we return to none of that. We do not know what he likes or what drives him and it’s the same with Iris. I don’t know what drives her either. She has a sister back home in the Philippines that she is estranged from, but we don’t know why. So, when the two suddenly realise they fell in love, we don’t see what connects them other than the time they have spent together. The love doesn’t come from any sense of connection other than shared time.

It doesn’t’ help that Bernardo’s directing choices are also quite puzzling. It felt like 90% of the film was shot in extreme close ups of the actor’s faces. It capitalizes a lot on the good looks and star power of its two leads. Except that it makes the film feel very small and confined and claustrophobic. There are barely any establishing shots. The hustle and bustle of Hong Kong is never emphasized and the grandeur of the backdrop of any of the locations end up carrying no consequence for the narrative. Adding to this is Bernardo’s choice to direct the dialogue scenes (of which there are too much of) as cut-to-cut. There are very few moments that Metawin and Janella speak to each other in the same shot. Parin says a line, cut to Iris, who says a line, cut, and then Parin says a line. The characters feel distant and never actually get close when the film should be putting them together.

And this is strange coming from Bernardo who manages to use the full backdrop of Sapporo in ‘Kita Kita’ to help amplify the growing love story between her two leads, or in ‘Untrue,’ where she situates her romance/drama-turned-suspense/thriller in the gorgeous Georgian landscape. Bernardo situates her characters in a vast world and knows how to use the location to amplify her themes and create stunning imagery that elevates the work. None of this skill set is at work in ‘Under Parallel Skies.’ Very little of Hong Kong is scene and it never really fully plays out in the story – it could have been set in Thailand or the Philippines and nothing essentially changes in the story.

There are a lot of cliches that fill up the rest of the film to help fill in the gaps of the underdeveloped characters or storylines. All the elements are presents for a hit – a strong writer/director with a great track record for producing groundbreaking work, two big stars from different countries and cultures, a popular genre, an exotic location – but none of these things come into alignment and the film is way too close for comfort (cinematographically) that it leaves no room to breathe or to gain scope while the story is so thin that it resorts to familiar cliches to fill in the gaps.

While his latest film is a dystopian science fiction imagining of an America in the midst of the second civil war, some articles quote him as saying it will be his last directorial effort as he plans to concentrate solely on writing. Despite this, the film operates very much in the contemporary mode. There are no zombies here like in ‘28 Days Later’ or aliens like in ‘Annihilation’ or AI like in the excellent ‘Ex Machina.’ No, this film is set in a future where America is at war with itself, a third term president-turned-dictator is battling the military might of secessionist states. There is no hi-tech equipment here. This is just a prediction of things to come based on an artist’s interpretation of where the United States of America is going if it does not fix itself any time soon.

‘Civil War’ follows four journalists as they make the trip from a war-torn New York down to Washington DC where they hope to interview the President. The group is led by Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), a renowned war photojournalist, followed by the journalist Joel (Wagner Moura). They are joined by the senior journalist Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), a sort of mentor for the two. Rounding up the cast is Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), a young photojournalist who looks up to Lee as her “hero.”

The trip to the nation’s capital is wrought with danger and against her better judgment, Lee becomes a sort of mentor to the inexperienced Jessie. The weariness and jadedness that Dunst encapsulates into her portrayal of Lee Smith really sells the rich and vivid imagery that Garland adorns his film. ‘Civil War’ is wonderfully shot and the ways by which he imagines a ruined America – open air stadiums filled with graffiti, the highways filled with broken cars and families walking along the road moving their things with shopping carts, set pieces that look like universities used as a war zone – it’s such striking imagery because these are the same images used to depict wars in other countries with American soldiers coming in as heroes. In ‘Civil War,’ the tables have been turned. The majority of Hollywood movies have always positioned America as the heroes in any war story. Here, they are at war with themselves.

The film is extremely political yet, as some critics have pointed out, this is not some commentary on Trump or wokeism or any specific political issue in the United States now. Without any real backstory as to how this narrative has reached this point – that the film begins right at the zenith of the civil war – it’s a snapshot of how horrible things are going to be if the things that are tearing up the United States now isn’t fixed, this film looks more like a primer than a fictional depiction. 

It’s an anti-war film even though it has long sequences of really riveting battle scenes. But none of it is glamorized or romanticized. It’s bloody. It’s ugly. People get hurt. People die. It’s merciless and there’s no joy in any of it. Regardless of how meticulously it is done. Through the eyes of Dunst, Spaeny, Moura, and Henderson, we see it how it really is – senseless and devastating.

But as journalists, they have to remain detached. They need to get the story so that they can get it out there so that the people can be moved to action. And that’s where the film finds its second layer because as Spaeny’s Jessie starts to find the means to detach, Dunst’s Lee Smith begins to show signs of the cracks splitting open, years of exposure to this sort of imagery tearing her up inside. It’s fantastic counterpoint performance for both actresses.

This is a brave and demanding film. It subverts years and years of Hollywood propaganda in depicting the United States as “the greatest country in the world.” It’s a fictional setting but it is pointed in the ways that it highlights all that is wrong in America today. Much like the journalists in the movie, we are being made to move, to act, to feel. If it’s true that Garland is done with directing movies, then it’s a powerful way to end his directing career. It’s a triumph in every aspect.

The grandmother’s story is one set in World War II, a young Sara (Ariella Glasser) witnesses her town slowly change as the Nazi presence gets stronger and stronger within her peaceful, picturesque town in the French countryside. When the Nazis come in full force and try to roundup all the Jews, her teacher and principal try to help her, and the other Jewish kids escape. The boy she likes, Vincent (Jem Matthews) gives them up and while all the other kids are taken, she manages to escape and with the help of the school outcast, the polio-stricken Julien (Orlando Schwerdt), she manages to flee and hide in his barn with the help of Julien’s parents.

As the Nazi occupation in France tightens, Sara’s world becomes extremely small. Her whole life revolves around the empty barn and the regular visits from Julien, who has become her lifeline. To pass the time, Julien shares his schoolwork with her, and they both engage in make-believe games that opens up both their worlds in fantastic ways that cinema can exploit so wonderfully through special effects, camerawork, and great acting.

‘White Bird: A Wonder Story’ benefits from strong performances by its young cast. Glasser and Schwerdt are the grounding force that keeps the film charming and engaging. The way their friendship blossoms into love was portrayed with youthful innocence amidst the tension-filled backdrop of Nazi-occupied France. Mirren is always a solid performer, bringing charm to an otherwise standard characterization of the French artist-grandmother figure. Despite the role being that of a narrator to the main story told in flashback, there are hints of a loving, concerned grandmother in the way she relates to Gheisar that adds a little something to the mix. Gillian Anderson doesn’t get to do much as Julien’s mother other than the standard fare of a film of this tone and subject matter.

There’s a timeliness to the story about the kindness that bloomed in the face of the Nazi fascist regime. The way people went out of their way to help the Jews during this time of brutal persecution. I can see how the story relates to Julian’s own story from ‘Wonder,’ which I only read about after seeing ‘White Bird: A Wonder Story’ but the way it echoes the current global climate regarding the destruction of Palestinian lives and way of life does not go unnoticed. The film is a straight-up, standard feel-good film that director Marc Foster has quite some success in with films like ‘Finding Neverland’ and ‘A Man Called Otto.’ He manages to take these almost formulaic plot lines and mines them for all its cinematic potential and delivers a film that can be quite predictable but still hits the right buttons.

This is not a subtle movie with its cheesy lines about kindness and how light can conquer the darkness. It even ends with Mirren’s grandmother character making a speech at the exhibition of her retrospective that allows her to underscore the core message of the film just in case anyone may have missed it. The timing of this film’s released is suspect but for anyone looking for something hopeful, something magical to watch during these dark times, ‘White Bird: A Wonder Story’ is offering itself fully to the audience to address this lack.

“There was of course mention of flying body parts,” shares Williams. “But one of them, who seemed to be around 18, raised their hand and confidently answered, ‘that you can be a completely unhinged weirdo and still deserve to be loved!’ This movie won’t be for everyone, but if anyone leaves it feeling THAT way, then in my eyes, I’ve more than done my job!”

In Lisa Frankenstein, it’s 1989 and Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old, is trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. Despite the unwavering support offered by her plucky cheerleader step sister Taffy (Liza Soberano – who has earned local and international praise, including from Hollywood director Joe Russo, for her performance!), Lisa only finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837 – and whose corpse she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed.

The film, inspired by 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein and ’80s favorites including Weird Science, was written by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body). Cody found an ideal collaborator in Williams, an actress turned filmmaker known for her voice-over work on such projects as Nickelodeon’s animated series The Legend of Korra and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Williams also starred in Freeform’s anthology series Dead of Summer and enjoyed recurring roles on the hit series Teen Wolf, before writing and directing her first short film, 2018’s Shrimp. Lisa Frankenstein is the feature film directorial debut of Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams and part-Filipina Marsha Garces.  

Cody was ceaselessly impressed by the atmosphere Williams fostered on set. “Zelda ran one of the most warm, welcoming and efficient sets I’ve ever seen,” says Cody. “She also grew up in the industry, so instead of seeing the usual first-film jitters, I saw a director calmly and smoothly operating inside her comfort zone. She was an ally to the actors, and to the script as well.” 

Adds Kathryn Newton, who plays Lisa: “The world in the script is so heightened, but Zelda managed to inject so much heart and love into it. She’s really in the moment, thinking about every little detail. Zelda’s fun and cool and I trust her, and that’s really all you want in a director – someone you trust. She always had my back.”

In making a story that is a darkly funny, bizarrely romantic and gleefully gory celebration of love, Williams says she hopes to remind audiences to embrace their own eccentricities. In a world hellbent on telling people to be curated, perfect and small, it’s important to remember that sometimes, bigger and wilder is just better. “I would really love them to leave feeling maybe a bit more comfortable in their weirdness, a bit more seen in whatever way they thought made them too odd to be lovable,” says the director.

Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), now away from his home and propelled by fate into an intergalactic power struggle. As he journeys with the Fremen people, he tries to gain their confidence with the support of Chani (Zendaya) and Stilgar (Javier Bardem). To prepare for their continuous revolt against the tyrannical Harkonnens, and to truly be a part of the Fremen, Paul takes one of their most dangerous trials. 

The Harkonnens carry on pillaging Arrakis for spice, which the Fremen have been violently opposing. As tensions escalate and the Harkonnens gather forces, the Baron (Stellan Skarsgård) lets one of his more vicious and bloodthirsty nephews, Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler) take part in the war. Them and the other royal families serve the Emperor (Christopher Walken), previously unseen in 2021’s Dune. In Dune: Part Two we are taken to his realm, and that of his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh). 

The themes of the film are both timeless and timely, as love and loyalty, humanity versus nature, take center stage in Dune: Part Two. On one side are the Fremen who have adapted to their native land of the desert, surviving by being one with it and learning to live alongside its harsh nature. On the other lie the Harkonnens who’ve epitomized corruption and greed. Paul Atreides is at the center of the struggle, battling the people that eradicated his clan while fighting against the destiny that was handed to him.

“Dune: Part Two” will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Google tapped Monica Regalario-Cacatian, a Filipina artist who uses sand as an art medium to spread positive messages online. She first rose to prominence on TV5’s Talentadong Pinoy talent competition. Aside from inspiring content, she uses her art to promote advocacies such as raising awareness for gender equality, and victims of sexual violence, child abuse, displacement, to name a few. 

In the collaboration with Google, Monica created a 60-second sand art content on YouTube Shorts focused on simple tips that netizens can follow to be safer on the internet. These tips are: Secure your accounts using Google Passkeys, Avoid scams on SMS and online, Fact-check information, and Educate others so they too can be safer on the internet. With millions of Filipinos using YouTube and Shorts, promoting the creative content on the platform will reach and engage a lot of netizens.

To also show the use of responsible AI, Google and Monica used Bard, Google’s generative AI, to develop the script of the YouTube Shorts content.

“Google is committed to helping people be safer online. Aside from Google products which are safe and secure by design, we deliver on this goal through several initiatives including raising awareness and forging local partnerships. We believe that by collaborating with Filipina artists like Monica, we can support local creatives and at the same time, champion internet safety,” said Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs of Google in the Philippines.

“Sand art can be a creative and effective medium for promoting advocacies like internet safety. It offers a unique and entertaining way to tell stories which can engage audiences of all ages online,” said Monica Regalario-Cacatian. “I hope that this campaign will reach as many people as possible. May this project help educate Filipinos to use the internet safely and responsibly.”

Monica added, “I am deeply grateful to Google and the individuals behind this collaboration. Their dedication to support and promote local artists like me is really encouraging and will greatly benefit the creative community. It is truly fulfilling that my art can be of help in raising awareness about the importance of internet safety.”

Previously, Google partnered with Ben&Ben for a catchy song and with a youth group for spoken word poetry on YouTube towards the same cause.

When I saw the trailer for the film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the 2004 film, I had to ask why. Why make another movie when the original movie was already perfect as it was? Especially when the whole idea of a nasty, mean queen bee is such an outdated concept in 2024? This is the age of the internet and cancel culture. People like Regina George would be canceled in a heartbeat. How would this version address this shift in the generational mindset? And the trailer made it feel like it was exactly the same movie with some jokes just swapped for a more modern take but was essentially the same.

So, I was sitting in my seat, as the movie began, and when the first song opened, an intro presented like an IG or FB reel or Tiktok with Janis and Damian (Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey, respectively) singing a song with the tone of a narrator, I immediately put my walls up and resisted. Despite the excellent vocals of Cravalho and Spivey, I found fault within the song. The two were playing their own instruments in a garage but the moment the garage doors open and it’s the wide-open savannah of Africa and we are introduced to Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, I was turned upside down.

It was an incredible scene transition that would be carried out throughout the whole film. Rice sings Cady’s first song about her life in Kenya and the song was catchy and allowed us into the interior world of our protagonist. One quick, clever transition later and she’s in high school back in the United States and experiencing her first day.

As much as I was resisting it, this musical version of ‘Mean Girls’ found a way through my walls. The full-on musical numbers help break reality and create a world for the film that is entirely of its own. It allows for the presence of a popular girl in school like Regina George to exist because the movie is not set in any sort of reflection of real life. It brought the story to the level of a fable or a modern fairy tale and so it created a space for the less realistic parts to exist.

So, when Renee Rapp makes her entrance as Regina George, the effect is actually quite staggering. Rapp is a powerful presence with a strong, powerful voice that demands attention. Rapp is not your typical svelte or skinny blonde girl. She’s a strongly built, hot young girl with the vocal chops of a diva. She has incredible confidence mixed with deadly charisma. Rachel McAdams, who originated the role in 2004, was perfect for that era’s imagination of the American dream girl but Renee Rapp is the rightful evolution of it. And boy can she sing!

Everything within this version of ‘Mean Girls’ pretty much follows the same narrative beats as the original. What is different is now that instead of Cady Heron’s narration, the voice-over is now song numbers and each girl gets a chance to reflect on their interior worlds. While Karen (played by Avantika) gets a humorous dance song about how young women can dress sexy during Halloween (as a reflection on the misplaced needs of young teen girls to be thought of as hot), it is Gretchen Wiener’s (Bebe Wood) song about her own insecurities that allows her to let Regina step all over her add something new and layered to the character.

Certain jokes remain the same – fetch is still there, and so is “she doesn’t even go here” – though others have been replaced with new jokes; some that work and some that don’t but what is surprising is that the core message of ‘Mean Girls’ has not changed over the years, but it still feels timely and important until now. The usage of the elements of social media and the internet somehow fits perfectly into the story and manages to highlight the overturning of Regina George’s popularity in favor of Cady and this is done really well with this new intrusion. It manages to showcase how shallow and petty all the noise in social media can be. One day they are praising Regina and the next, they are making fun of her and praising Cady.

This new ‘Mean Girls’ doesn’t quite top the original. It’s hard to do. What it does, though, is that it takes everything good about the first and dresses it up in modern sensibilities and makes it sing and dance and have really good scene transitions. With the vocal prowess of Cravalho and Rapp pushing it along for good measure, the film manages to justify its production and gives us a pretty fun time in the cinema in the process.

For some reason, as the film unfolds, I felt that this film was better suited for Cinemalaya or QCinema than the MMFF. While all the narrative elements that were needed to create an unapologetic horror film was present, it was never delivered and instead it presented us with a film that fell more into the independent film mode and required more from its audience than what they might be expecting from a film in this particular festival.

‘Kampon’ is the story of a childless couple, Clark (Derek Ramsay) and Eileen (Beauty Gonzalez), who are plagued by society’s demands of completing a family unit with children. The societal pressure that comes from all fronts is a touchy subject for the couple. One rainy evening, a child knocks on their door looking for Clark, the former police colonel, and asks him to help her. She claims that he’s her father and this sends the couple into a tailspin.

Clark is on a quest to uncover the truth – after all, how can he have a child, he’s sterile – while Eileen’s own desires for motherhood are triggered and activated by the young girl, Jade (Erin Rose Espiritu). But as these films go, the child is not what she seems to be and as she entrenches herself into the lives of the couple, she brings with her sinister and dark forces at play.

Palisoc, with writer Dodo Dayao, create a world that is dark and full of terrible, horrible things. Clark is consumed by a memory from his police days that haunts him so much that he sleeps with a loaded gun by his bedside and has installed multiple CCTV cameras all over his house that he checks constantly. Echoing Jade’s own past, her mother (Zeinab Harake) was subjected to a dark ritual after she was hurt by some unexplained tragedy. What makes these two events so striking is that they don’t occupy the same space in the narrative. They are too separate stories that come crashing together in Clark. This is a bigger world, with a bigger lore behind it and one that is fascinating to explore.

It is in the filmmaking that the film finds uneasy ground. Pushing more for style and a cerebral tone, the film keeps its distance from its characters, We never get too close to them to truly empathize or feel with them. The film keeps the energy and tonal strength at a steady level that we never feel drawn into these characters and their problems. While I’m usually a champion of restraint, I would have liked a few moments of tenderness between the couple, a moment for me to fall for them, to care for them, and for me to cheer them on. I think it’s telling that when Jade tells the couple that her father is Clark, the audience’s reaction to my screening was that of laughter and “bro, you got caught!” rather than shock, surprise, and “oh no! Did he cheat?” There’s a clinical way in which the dialogue is delivered, a tonal issue, where there are pauses and gaps between lines that makes it sound scripted. It works for films like ‘Killing of a Sacred Deer’ that feels off-kilter, but other than the visual representation with the wide-angled lenses on certain parts, the film feels leaning more into that of realism than formalism.

There’s actually a lot about ‘Kampon’ that I really liked. I liked when it got weird – and it does – where it presents a frightening substory that is never fully explained just for the sake of the frightening imagery it creates. I love that level of confidence. I love how it takes a nightmare sequence and fills it with the prophetic warnings of present and deceased characters in the film all shouting their calls for caution and they are accompanied by an animal mascot that showed in an earlier scene. The magic of the world is unexplained, and I love that about this movie. But the core of this film is that of Clark and Eileen and because it keeps a distance from its main characters, I feel that I was distant from the story itself. I was more interested in the world the film created than the story that runs through it. This makes for an interesting film for one of the independent film festivals, like Cinemalaya or QCinema, but for an MMFF film, it feels out of place.

Nobu Manila is ringing in the new year with a special seven-course dinner tasting menu exclusively offered on December 31 and January 1. Available for P5, 600++ per person, it starts with an amuse-bouche compliments of the chef, followed by Scallops with anchovy salsa and grilled vegetables, and Assorted Sushi and Inaniwa Noodle Soup with rolled beef and asparagus.
