Storm Signal No. 2 has been raised over Batanes and the northeastern parts of the Babuyan Islands due to weakened Typhoon Champi, locally known as Rosal, which is expected to bring life-threatening winds, the state weather bureau said on Friday.
Under the wind signal, gale-force winds are expected, posing a minor to moderate threat to life and property, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11:00 a.m. storm bulletin.
Other areas, including the rest of the Babuyan Islands, mainland Cagayan and Ilocos Norte, were placed under Storm Signal No. 1.
PAGASA warned that strong winds in these areas pose a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
The bureau also said Typhoon Champi had slightly weakened, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 185 kph.
The typhoon is unlikely to make landfall over the country’s landmass and may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday morning. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
