This voter guide explores the growing political influence of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada and the factors contributing to their increased visibility.

A Brief History of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada

The Filipino American community in Southern Nevada has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Many Filipino immigrants came to the region in search of better economic opportunities, primarily working in the hospitality, medical and gaming industries. Over time, they established thriving communities, contributing to the cultural diversity and energy of the region.

Factors Contributing to Increased Political Influence

Several factors have contributed to the growing political influence of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada:

  • Population Growth: The Filipino American population in Southern Nevada has experienced significant growth in recent years, making them a substantial demographic group within the region. This increased population size has given Filipino Americans greater political clout and visibility. There were approximately 168,200 Filipinos living in Las Vegas in 2020 according to a report released by APIAVote.org. It also stated that Filipinos make up about half of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Nevada, which is roughly 18% of the state's population. 

  • Community Engagement: Filipino American organizations and community leaders have played a crucial role in mobilizing their community and advocating for their interests. These organizations have worked to educate members about the political process, encourage voter registration, and support candidates who align with their priorities. i.e. FAMAN (Filipino American Media Association of Nevada), Filipino American in Political Organization With Equal Representation (Fil Am in POWER)., and National Federation of Filipino American Associations NV (NaFFAA NV) just to name a few.

  • Economic Impact: Filipino Americans have made significant contributions to the Southern Nevada economy, particularly in the hospitality, medical and gaming industries. Their economic power has given them a stronger voice in shaping the region's policies and priorities.

  • Political Awareness: Filipino Americans have become increasingly politically aware and engaged, recognizing the importance of participating in the democratic process. This increased political consciousness has led to greater involvement in local, state, and national elections. For 2024 elections, we have the following Filipino American candidates who are running for office: 

  • Erica Mosca, Assembly District 14 (E Charleston Blvd, E Sahara Ave and Vegas Valley Drive Between the 95 Fwy and S Nellis Blvd.)

  • Aaron Bautista, State University Regent District 4 

  • Karl Carata- CCSD District A,(Clark County areas in Henderson, Laughlin and Searchlight NV)

  • Ron Quince running for Congress.

  • Elected Officials: Several Filipino Americans have been elected to local and state offices, representing the interests of their community and advocating for policies that benefit all residents.

  • Lobbying Efforts: Filipino American organizations have engaged in lobbying efforts to address issues important to their community, such as immigration reform, healthcare access, and education. i.e. Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada.
