Knowing Nadia Arroyo's distinct taste, I can relive the memories that I spent with the famous Society of Seven in Honolulu. Polistico was the longest Filipino Entertainment celebrity show in Honolulu, with over 14 years of “must-see” when visiting Hawaii during the 80s and 90s.

Combined with another over 10 years performing in Las Vegas, Polistico has the right and all the credibility to compare beautiful places and their beaches.

Palawan, Philippines' largest province is considered home to the best beaches in the country. To understand its full aura, one must experience snorkeling or swimming and let that tan naturally magnify the coastal experience.

Palawan is a diverse expanse of landscape with a combination of beach activities. Walk around its villages and it is like a museum of culture and passion.  Many pioneers or the first families who developed the island are still alive and with them are historical landmarks.  Don't miss the Ponce Garden in Puerto Princessa, a former residence of Congressman Ponce who is among the pioneers of Palawan.  He has many international friends from Japan who love him.  True enough many Japanese live in Palawan.  One of the best tourist destinations is named HONDA Bay.  Not at all a coincidence!

To complete your experience never let pass the opportunity of tasting Palawan seafood, spoil yourself with crabs, giant shrimps, and lobsters, a savory taste that will tickle your imagination. It is not just more of the thought that made me smile, it’s the thought that it’s authentic, Jun Bioco said. Palawan as a whole has an Inspiration-inducing buffet combination of different experiences from its coastal colors,  white in some areas, pink, and my favorite cafe latte- colored, Noubikko said.

Palawan is like the centerpiece of things to visit in the Philippines.  In addition to its beautiful beaches, Palawan cuddles many breathtaking islands like El Nido and Coron.  And, don't forget on your bucket list, the fabled, the most expensive island resort named BANWA which is right in front of  Tumarbong, Roxas, the site of the most perfectly heavenly created cafe latte beach, home of the Catalina Luxury Residence,

Beulah International Development says that when the Tumarbong is developed, there will be a twist of vanilla in the cafe latte-colored sands, Carlos de Castro, interior architect to some of the Philippines' famous landmarks, like Okada, Solaire, and Raffles Hotels.

We know that we cannot own the things we experience. But the memories and the unforgettable warmth of Filipino hospitality are yours free to reminisce for as long as you live. Go and experience.  See for yourself "The rainbow of Palawan, with love!" Take it from me, said Jun Polistico

Tumarbong, home of the future Catalina Luxury Residence in particular, is about wonderful people, the picturesque sand, the seafood, and the grandeur of that magnificent café latte-colored beach to behold.

Not Tea, Not Milk, but Café Latte Colored Sand Beaches of the Philippines https://philippine-times.com/not-tea-not-milk-but-cafe-latte-colored-sand-beaches-of-the-philippines https://philippine-times.com/not-tea-not-milk-but-cafe-latte-colored-sand-beaches-of-the-philippines

August 24, 2023 -  Manila, Philippines -  Not Jasmine Tea. Not Milk, but Café Latte- colored beach sand, Noubikko said, CEO of RPConnect.

Palawan Island is one lucky place to have a Cafe Latte color of the sand because  it is youthful and energetic.  It's coffee without caffeine!  Its provides emotional strength, optimistic, uplifting , mnd most of all, it fun!

This golden bright blush is a result of crushed coral mixing with the shells. Travelers often come just to watch how this café latte sand reflects the sun which is constantly flocking the natural sparkles of their colorful underwater show. Carlos de Castro, said.  Carlos is the interior architect of several of the iconic landmarks in the Philippines, like Okada, Solaire, and Raffles Hotel.

Palawan Beaches are so indulging that an all-day excursion poses like an unnecessary option. Surround that with the gentle murmur of waves and the occasional laughter of fellow beach-goers is a day well-spent that can confuse the mind if there is any available comparison.

While in Palawan you are guaranteed to be mesmerized by the warm crystal-clear waters that gently lap the shore and an underwater spectacle.  If you are a nature lover, this pristine café latte sand is just magic!

So go ahead, lay out your towel, and let the waves’ rhythm set the pace. Get your sunglasses ready, and see the fish darting around your toes like a lounging session also ready to relax with your feet…  The rest…  leave your imagination and explore the underwater rainbow which no word fits better.

This slice of paradise boasts a stunning perfect soaking of the sun and splashing pure bliss.  It's a sunbather’s dream in crystal-clear waves gently kiss the shore, Jun Polistico, the legendary King of the Philippine Ballad said.

In Palawan there’s no need to rush; the sun generously bathes the beaches all year round, Nadia Arroyo, President of Beulah International Development

The Village of Tumarbong, located in Palawan is a dream where the sun paints the sky, reflecting a spectrum of blues.  With the café latte-colored sand, the sunset will make aurora borealis jealous with plenty of colorful contrast to compare. In the picture, overlooking the most expensive Banwa Resort.  It is the chosen place of Carlos de Castro's luxury residential masterpiece, named after his granddaughter, CATALINA

A visit isn’t complete without snorkeling and gazing at colorful fish that hug your imagination. It’s no wonder visitors leave with dazzling stories and come back for more.  One visit encourages social communication and creativity!

BEULAH is set to build Luxury Residences, one is Catalina located in Roxas, Palawan. Beulah's Catalina Brand is a masterpiece, named after the first granddaughter of Carlos de Castro.  A Brand that already defines the architectural work the architect must have put into if it's named after his beloved grandchild … like a gem set by Cartier to cover a high-above-the-much-adorned, said Noubikko, CEO of RPConnect.

A United Voice: Empowering Filipino Americans Through Collective Action https://philippine-times.com/a-united-voice-empowering-filipino-americans-through-collective-action https://philippine-times.com/a-united-voice-empowering-filipino-americans-through-collective-action Las Vegas, NV – Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada have long faced significant challenges, including immigration hurdles, limited healthcare access, and educational inequities. These issues have deeply impacted our community, affecting our families, livelihoods, and overall well-being. To address these pressing concerns, local organizations like the Filipino-American Political Organization With Equal Representation(Fil-Am P.O.W.E.R.) and the National Federation of Filipino American Association(NaFFAA) have emerged as powerful advocates for our community.

One notable example of their collective impact was the "Election 2024: Your Voice! Your Choice!" event held at the +63fifty Events Center. With a sold-out crowd of over 300 attendees, this forum provided a platform for Filipino American voters to engage with candidates from all levels of government.

Senator Jackie Rosen, Assemblywoman Erica Mosca (District 14), and Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Dept. 5 Judge Cynthia Cruz along with numerous other candidates, participated in the event, outlining their plans to address the community's top concerns. Despite differing political affiliations, all candidates demonstrated a shared commitment to improving the lives of Filipino Americans through effective policies and programs.

To address the persistent voting barriers faced by many Filipino Americans, community leaders have launched a comprehensive initiative. This includes "Election 2024," a dedicated two-page column within the Philippine Times of Southern Nevada, serving as a valuable platform for information and resources. Additionally, community-wide events such as the "Meet Your Candidates" forums in Henderson and North Las Vegas have been organized. These initiatives, spearheaded by The Philippine Times of Southern Nevada in collaboration with FAMAN, FACCGN, Fil-Am TV, and PHLV Radio, aim to provide essential information and resources to voters, empowering them to participate fully in the electoral process.

With approximately 200,000 Filipino Americans in Nevada, a collective voice is essential in shaping the future of their community. By actively participating in the electoral process and casting votes, Filipino Americans in Nevada can empower themselves and drive positive change.

In a recent data released last August by AAPI Data- a leading research and policy organization producing accurate data for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities , 90% of Filipino American voters are planning to vote in November — with 74% being absolutely certain they will vote. (2024 and 2020 Asian American Voter Surveys). This demonstrates their unwavering commitment to being heard.

Beyond voting, Filipino Americans have also been actively involved in various community initiatives. Numerous organizations have worked tirelessly to provide essential services, support local businesses, and promote cultural understanding. These efforts have strengthened the community and helped to foster a sense of belonging.

However, there is still much work to be done. We must continue to shed light on policies and issues that impact Filipino Americans in Nevada, such as affordable housing, mental health services, and support for immigrant families. Additionally, we must strive to bridge the gap between generations, ensuring that our younger members are connected to their heritage and empowered to become future leaders.

By working together and leveraging the power of a collective voice, members of the community can create a more equitable and inclusive future for Filipino Americans in Las Vegas. Let us continue to inspire and empower each other, and build a community that is strong, resilient, and united.

Introduction

Filipino Americans have been a vibrant and integral part of the Southern Nevada community for decades, contributing significantly to the region's economic, cultural, and social fabric. In recent years, Filipino Americans have also emerged as a significant political force, making their voices heard and their presence felt in the halls of power. This voter guide explores the growing political influence of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada and the factors contributing to their increased visibility.

A Brief History of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada

The Filipino American community in Southern Nevada has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Many Filipino immigrants came to the region in search of better economic opportunities, primarily working in the hospitality, medical and gaming industries. Over time, they established thriving communities, contributing to the cultural diversity and energy of the region.

Factors Contributing to Increased Political Influence

Several factors have contributed to the growing political influence of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada:

  • Population Growth: The Filipino American population in Southern Nevada has experienced significant growth in recent years, making them a substantial demographic group within the region. This increased population size has given Filipino Americans greater political clout and visibility. There were approximately 168,200 Filipinos living in Las Vegas in 2020 according to a report released by APIAVote.org. It also stated that Filipinos make up about half of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Nevada, which is roughly 18% of the state's population.

  • Community Engagement: Filipino American organizations and community leaders have played a crucial role in mobilizing their community and advocating for their interests. These organizations have worked to educate members about the political process, encourage voter registration, and support candidates who align with their priorities. i.e. FAMAN (Filipino American Media Association of Nevada), Filipino American in Political Organization With Equal Representation (Fil Am in POWER)., and National Federation of Filipino American Associations NV (NaFFAA NV) just to name a few.

  • Economic Impact: Filipino Americans have made significant contributions to the Southern Nevada economy, particularly in the hospitality, medical and gaming industries. Their economic power has given them a stronger voice in shaping the region's policies and priorities.

  • Political Awareness: Filipino Americans have become increasingly politically aware and engaged, recognizing the importance of participating in the democratic process. This increased political consciousness has led to greater involvement in local, state, and national elections. For 2024 elections, we have the following Filipino American candidates who are running for office:

  • Erica Mosca, Assembly District 14 (E Charleston Blvd, E Sahara Ave and Vegas Valley Drive Between the 95 Fwy and S Nellis Blvd.)

  • Aaron Bautista, State University Regent District 4

  • Karl Carata- CCSD District A,(Clark County areas in Henderson, Laughlin and Searchlight NV)

  • Ron Quince running for Congress.

Examples of Political Influence

Filipino Americans have achieved notable successes in Southern Nevada politics, including:

  • Elected Officials: Several Filipino Americans have been elected to local and state offices, representing the interests of their community and advocating for policies that benefit all residents.

  • Lobbying Efforts: Filipino American organizations have engaged in lobbying efforts to address issues important to their community, such as immigration reform, healthcare access, and education. i.e. Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada.

  • Civic Engagement: Filipino Americans have actively participated in civic initiatives, such as voter registration drives, community clean-ups, and volunteer work. Their involvement has helped to strengthen their community and build relationships with other groups.

Conclusion

The growing political influence of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada is a testament to their resilience, determination, and invaluable contributions to the region. As their population continues to expand and their community becomes increasingly engaged, Filipino Americans are poised to play an even more significant role in shaping the future of Southern Nevada. Their unique perspectives, cultural richness, and deep-rooted commitment to their community make them a vital force in local politics. As they continue to advocate for their interests and those of their fellow citizens, Filipino Americans are poised to become even more influential leaders in Southern Nevada and beyond.

“When Beulah committed to Ecotranzit’s proposal and offerings,” Nadia Arroyo said, Beulah's president, we efficiently increased our marketing strategies across our program to a remarkable height in the EV market while Qatar’s Ecotranzit will be doubling production to supply the Philippines.

"The output of interest and level of business optimism is consistent with economic projection rising sharply this year and with strong momentum to be sustained through the next year, Jun Bioco, Operations Manager for Beulah said a "direct consequence of demand running ahead is steep to hold hinting that demand for EV has further to rise. And, with EcoTranzit squarely behind Beulah’s Transport Modernization Project, we expect we will top the EV industry in 2024.

Carlos de Castro, Director of Beulah and the architect who designed the talked-about affordable housing for the Drivers Association is thrilled to partner with Qatar's Ecotranzit which is committed to providing sustainable transportation that is in line with the green housing Program he exclusively made for them.  I believe that this is a testament to the equitable future of the country, he added.

The combination of government incentives, volatile diesel fuel costs, and corporate commitments to climate actions will accelerate the growth of electric machinery in the off-road market, all these incentives are core programs that enabled these transactions to take place, Noubikko said, CEO of RPConnect and the Chief Financial Director for Beulah.

The Ecotranzit facility assembly line in China, Morroco, and Kazakstan are gearing up for the upcoming purchase orders of Beulah.  Beula is also positioned to capture a greater share of the market.

PRESIDENT MARCOS CHEERED IN CZECH REPUBLIC https://philippine-times.com/president-marcos-cheered-in-czech-republic https://philippine-times.com/president-marcos-cheered-in-czech-republic

Marcos, along with Czech President Petr Pavel, witnessed the signing of deals during the Philippines-Czech Business Forum held at Czernin Palace.

Among the agreements signed was the memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (SEIPI) and the Electrical and Electronic Association of the Czech Republic (ELA).

Under the deal, SEIPI and ELA will establish a long-term collaborative relationship in the field of electronics that would include participation in the global network of leading technology and innovation centers or engagement of small and midsized companies.

The IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines, Inc. (IBPAP) and the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic (SPCR) also signed an Agreement of Mutual Cooperation to promote commercial and industrial relations.

The cooperation deal between the IBPAP and SPCR covers the exchange of better practices on policy and regulations; the development and promotion of information technology (IT) competencies; and certification or facilitation of responsible implementation of artificial intelligence.

Likewise signed was the Agreement of Mutual Cooperation between the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the SPCR to promote trade and investment between the Philippines and the Czech Republic.

There will be exchanges of trade missions, organization of trade and investment seminars, and exchange of market information between the PCCI and the SPCR.

In his speech, Marcos said the agreements mark a significant milestone in the two countries’ journey towards mutual prosperity.

“These agreements are not just documents. They are a commitment to unlocking the vast potential that lies in our partnership,” Marcos said.

“Today’s agreements also signify a very exciting step forward. They embody our commitment to complement our strengths and explore new avenues of cooperation,” he added.

Marcos said the Philippines, with its strategic location and vibrant economy, is committed to becoming a reliable partner for the Czech Republic in implementing its Indo-Pacific Strategy.

“We believe that by working together, we can achieve our shared goals of stability, economic growth, and sustainable development in the region,” he said.

Free trade talks

Marcos also asked for the Czech Republic’s support for the resumption of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Philippines and the European Union (EU).

He said the resumption of talks for the FTA would be a “big step” in furthering the Philippines’ trade ties with the EU member-states, including the Czech Republic.

He said the free trade deal is essential in establishing “a stable, predictable, and enabling business environment that promotes inclusive and sustainable growth and development."

The Philippines and the EU launched exploratory talks on bilateral FTA in 2013.

There were two negotiations held in Brussels in 2016 and in Cebu in 2017. Talks have been on hiatus since then.

Marcos said he also looks forward to welcoming Czech Republic companies to further discussions and potential industry cooperation during the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation in July this year.

He said the forum aims to deepen the dialogue, explore new partnerships, and foster an environment conducive to business and investment between the Philippines and the Czech Republic.

“With mutual respect and understanding, we can forge a partnership that not only benefits our nations but also contributes to the broader goals of peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific Region and beyond,” Marcos said.

The Czech Republic ranked as the Philippines’ 39th trading partner, 28th export market, and 47th import supplier in 2022, with total bilateral trade amounting to USD303.21 million. (PNA)

Grand Knight of Rizal, Sir Stepan Klokocka, an ardent supporter of the Marcos Administration, attended one of the gatherings of His Excellency. Stepan's Advocacy is in line with the President's messages in exchanging technology with EV Transport Modernization and the technology for Affordable Housing under Beulah International Development.

COFFICERY Favored with Investment&Positive Profile https://philippine-times.com/philippines-cofficery-is-investment-positive https://philippine-times.com/philippines-cofficery-is-investment-positive

We sipped the coffee black with a splash of cream and evaluated them for flavor, acidity, and richness. We researched the companies’ sourcing and gave points to Fair Trade, organic, and other practices that are environmentally conscious and favorable to the farmers. We also factored in prices and the range of offerings. Then, the magic was maid which is blending with cream, with a little bit of that and a little bit of this (secret formula, of course).  Voila!  Cofficery was born.

Paranaque is one lucky suburb to have tested several brands in multiple must-try, must-see, tried that and tried this, which all ended with one choice:  Cofficery, a Coffee shop + restaurant + office all rolled into one perfect concept, said Jun Polistico, King of the Philippine Ballad.

Sometimes a dark roast is too dark, or a light roast too light, but we have solved that issue, Martha, said.  Along with dark, medium, and light, we offer dark-medium and medium-light options, so there’s truly a taste for every palate. Attention to detail extends from careful sourcing, through philanthropy designed to boost conditions in growing regions — even their packaging, so you can feel good pay cup after cup.

Cofficery is not just a coffee shop, it's a full-service restaurant with an aura of an office + coffeeshop.  And, if you need coffee to do your job well, just think about COFFICERY –that’s the inspiration behind this coffee. Founded to live up to its “bold” name, Coffee + Office.  It's a sip of inspiration-infused coffee and food to jolt you and inspire your boss for your next performance review.  Take it from a Lawyer who drinks several cups of coffee and needs access to an office in a limited time.

Cofficery offers an array of chosen must-try and get ready to be addicted menus.

Cofficery is not just a coffee shop, it’s a full gourmet restaurant.  From the more traditional (Vanilla Bean Blossom, Pumpkin Spice) to the super-creative (Caramel Apple, Maple Pecan, Coconut Creme, Peach Nectar). The cofficery uses, real spices, so you get a hit of natural sweetness in the coffee and with no fake taste.

Cofficery is a game changer, they say.  Starbucks and CoffeeBean are popular hype, but, if you want your cup in an office restaurant with the most satisfying brew, give the trophy to Cofficery.  It’s what Carlos de Castro, interior designer of Okada and Solaire Casino Resorts, said.  The aroma, the flavor, and even the ritual can spark investment interest, said Nadia Arroyo, President of Beulah Development.

Joshua Nungay (standing) during a business meeting at Cofficery while Atty Martha and team were listening

If you happen to be in Moonwalk, Paranaque, get your WAZE of Google Maps.   Don’t miss Cofficery which is located in Daang Batang and E-Rodriguez Ave Moonwalk.  Order an espresso or the double latte to discover for yourself the luscious coffee which stands to milk in lattes and cappuccino and get ready for a great shot.

According to Jun Biuco, Chief Operations Officer for Beulah, by 2030, 80% of passenger cars in the Philippines  will be powered electrically, and, by 2040, almost all cars are already powered by electric cars.  Transport experts predict that over the next decade, users of car-sharing systems may increase several times to over a million people, and vehicle fleets to over four times, compared to today’s thousands, Nadia Arroyo agreed, President of Beulah.

The Ecotranzit facility assembly line in China, Morroco, and Kazakstan are gearing up for the upcoming purchase orders. EcoTranzit and Beula are also positioned to capture a greater share of the fast-growing market with the ability to quickly ramp up assembly as needed.
In 2024, Ecotranzit expects to commence distribution of other models that will incorporate advanced engineering and battery proprietary technology from modular and future-forward styling as well as telematics and performance data.

Transport Cooperative together with Beulah is constantly solving the complexity of fleet management by bringing together high-performance program applications. Ecotranzit features an internet-connected telemetry device that collects data between e-buses and customers to improve on-demand availability, visibility, and maintenance. Customers can use a portal to remotely adjust their customer settings before riding and even view reports on the driver’s performance when the ride is complete.

Q&A: Dean Gettman, CEO and Founder of Platinum Contracting of Nevada, on the Growth of Underground Utilities Industry https://philippine-times.com/qa-dean-gettman-ceo-and-founder-of-platinum-contracting-of-nevada-on-the-growth-of-underground-utilities-industry https://philippine-times.com/qa-dean-gettman-ceo-and-founder-of-platinum-contracting-of-nevada-on-the-growth-of-underground-utilities-industry

Subscribe to our email newsletter and follow us on social media.

Dean Gettman is the CEO and founder of Platinum Contracting of Nevada, a Las Vegas-based full-service general contracting firm who specializes in underground utilities. Dean oversees the firm’s operations including business development and project management, spearheading its expansion to over 30 team members and the completion of more than $20 million in projects throughout Las Vegas within the span of five years. Dean is also the president of Lake Las Vegas Lake Management, LLC.

1) What is the current state of the underground utilities industry in Nevada and how do you see it continue to grow?

As the Las Vegas home market continues to grow, the need for underground utilities grows with it. Having the proper infrastructure in place for a growing Las Vegas region is imperative. With an average influx around 6,000 new residents per month, there is a dire need for reliable and efficient utility distribution systems.

The current state of the underground utilities market is stable and trending upwards. With the introduction of federal programs like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) Program funding, we anticipate the need for underground utilities to only increase in the coming months. Especially the need for properly installed power grids. If the grid cannot sustain demand the situation will become critical, as we've seen in such states such as Texas and California.

2) What kind of trend are you seeing in the underground utilities industry in the Western region states and do you think Nevada will follow them?

We are seeing more and more states mandating underground utilities, slowly eliminating the install of above ground or overhead utility installations. Cities who have implemented underground utility ordinances such as, Ft. Collins and Colorado Springs, Colorado and Anaheim, California, are reporting 99.9 percent reliability rates and some with more than a 97 percent reduction in electric outage minutes.

Nevada seems to be following suit with almost all new community developments implementing underground utilities. Not only are these installations more reliable, but they are also safer, reducing the likelihood of weather damage, damages caused by equipment and overhead lines and the need for maintenance.

3) What do you see as the demand for underground utilities from real estate developers and residents in Southern Nevada?

More and more developers are pushing for underground utilities. Aesthetically, they are more appealing when entirely hidden from view. It also reduces the risk of inclement weather knocking down overhead power lines, potentially damaging homes or causing outages. The push for moving all utilities underground continues to grow as reliability and efficiency is becoming a priority, and as we prepare to accommodate more energy sources like electric vehicles.

This week, the Gaudin Ford Commercial Vehicle Department presented a $40,000 check to the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Nevada for the needs of the James Clubhouse located in North Las Vegas.

The funds were raised at Gaudin Ford's third annual golf tournament held in April. The James Clubhouse features a brand-new game room, which was renovated with the $35,000 donation from last year’s Gaudin Ford Golf Tournament, along with a youth innovation lab, art studio, teen center, teen innovation lab, gym, and outdoor area with a field, patio area, and garden.

“We were thrilled with the turnout of our third annual golf tournament,” remarked Wesley Gregg, General Manager of Gaudin Ford. “Thanks to our sponsors and those who participated in the tournament which allowed us the opportunity to give back to an organization that does so much for the youth in our community – it just feels good.”

“This generous donation will make a significant impact by supporting us in renovating our cafeteria to help better serve the youth that walks through the doors each day," said Andy Bischel, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada.

Currently, 26 new multifamily properties are under development or slated for development in the greater Las Vegas area. With these new properties, inventory in the area will increase by 4.6% when the last is projected to finish in early 2024.

A new urban farm opened at Las Vegas’ Historic Westside this week. The project was funded by a $500,000 donation from MGM Resorts International to The Mayor’s Fund for Las Vegas LIFE.

The first crop was planted on March 7 and the first harvest is expected to be ready in late April. The city plans to distribute fresh produce from the urban farm to the Historic Westside community and eventually work with local partners to build a cooperative grocery store in James Gay Park.

“Public-private partnership and innovation is critical to addressing the needs of our city and neighborhoods,” said Mayor Goodman. “We are grateful to our partners who have joined with us to not only revitalize a currently unused public space, but to transform it into a farming facility that provides healthy food to neighborhood residents.”

This project is part of the HUNDRED Plan that was created in 2016. The master plan outlined the revitalization of the Historic Westside.

Yesterday, Ovation Development announced a new 195-unit below-market rent affordable housing development for seniors whose income falls below 30, 50, and 60 percent of area median income. The project is located on the northwest corner of Pebble Road and Eastern Avenue. The construction is expected to start in the fall with completion planned for early 2025.

The project will consist of one- and two-bedroom apartments. The amenities at this affordable property will be on par with market-rate properties, including a swimming pool and jacuzzi, game area, hair salon, gym, outdoor courtyards, and community gardens.

The 5-acre parcel is being conveyed to the County from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act and will in turn transfer the land to Ovation.

Special guests at the ceremony included U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, BLM Director Tracy Stone-Manning, BLM Nevada State Director Jon Raby, and HUD representatives.

"Our community has a dire need for affordable senior housing," said County Commissioner Naft. "That's why Clark County is investing significant resources in our Welcome Home initiative to increase the options for individuals in need of assistance. I want to thank our partners in the federal government, Alan and Jess Molasky of Ovation, Coordinated Living of Southern Nevada and our staff for helping to make this project a reality for the betterment of our entire community."

The Welcome Home Community Housing Fund initiative was created on April 5, 2022 by Clark County to address the urgent need for housing for low-income residents. On September 6, 2022, the County Commission approved funding of nearly $120 million to fund multiple affordable housing new construction and rehabilitation. Funded projects can be viewed on the County's website.

According to the County officials, there is currently a shortage of more than 85,000 homes for low-income and very low-income residents who earn less than 50% of area median income. To address the need for more affordable housing, the Welcome Home funds are also being used to create a community land trust, and the County is planning a future funding round for permanent supportive housing projects.

The Las Vegas Rotary Club celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special event held at the historic Fifth Street School in downtown Las Vegas on April 1st. The event was attended by members of the club, distinguished guests including Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony, and members of the community. Founded in 1923, the club is dedicated to civic and community service, supporting thousands of organizations  and donating millions to Las Vegas-based service efforts.

Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to learn more about the club's achievements over the past 100 years, as well as its current initiatives and goals for the future. Through its annual Santa Clothes program, the club has donated over $1.6 million in goods and services to more than 6,300 local children in need during the holiday season, providing at risk children with new clothes.

When the program launched 27 years ago, it provided clothes for 35 children with a budget of $5,000. Last year, the organization shopped for 348 children on a $114,000 budget. The 2022 event was in partnership with its sponsors Engelstad Foundation, Speedway Children’s Charities and all of the Southern Nevada RotaryClubs.

“The program has become a tradition for our Club, as it has grown into our most significant and successful annual charitable giving program,” said Caty Crockett, president of the Las Vegas RotaryClub. “Helping spread joy to children in need during the holidays is a gift to each of us. Giving back to our community and local children is at the core foundation of our values, which is why our goal is to always lend a helping hand wherever we can.”

Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony spoke passionately about the impact that the Las Vegas Rotary Club has had on the community and thanked the members for their dedication and commitment to service over the years. Keynote speaker Jack Sheehan conducted a presentation about the history of Las Vegas and his book "Quiet Kingmaker of Las Vegas: E. Parry Thomas".

The event also featured a silent auction, with proceeds going towards the club's ongoing charitable projects. One of the many service organizations the club has supported is the Salvation Army. Last year, over $20,000 was donated to their food pantry, which equates to 200,000 cans of food benefiting those in need.

In honor of its centennial anniversary, the club has donated $104,000 to The Smith Center, extending its educational efforts in support of local youth across five programs for the next two years. The evening concluded with live music and entertainment.

It’s also down from the all-time record price of $482,000 in May of 2022.

By the end of March 2023, LVR reported 4,196 single family homes listed for sale without any offer, up 109.3% from March 2022. A total of 2,962 existing homes, condos and townhomes sold in March 2023, down 27.8% for homes and down 35.6% for condos and townhomes from the same time last year.

The number of distressed sales remains historically low. Short sales and foreclosures combined accounted for 0.9% of all existing property sales in March 2023.

“Southern Nevada was one of the first places to experience this recent shift in the housing market,” said 2023 LVR President Lee Barrett. “It seems logical to me that we may also be among the first to come out of this recent slowdown. Our median home price hasn’t changed since December. Local home prices had previously been declining by 1 or 2% per month. This may be a sign that we’re near the bottom of this cycle.”

In March 2023, total transaction value for existing homes was more than $1.2 billion, down 33.1% from the same time last year.

LVR’s data was collected through its MLS, which does not account for all newly constructed homes sold by builders or homes for sale by owners.

Nevada State Bank has released the results of its 10th annual Small Business Survey, highlighting the economic experiences and insights of small business owners and executives in Nevada. The report reveals business concerns about eduction funding, affordable housing, and the challenges of finding and retaining quality employees.

Conducted by Applied Analysis in January 2023 on behalf of Nevada State Bank, the report surveyed more than 400 randomly selected small business decision makers, representing Nevada businesses with annual sales ranging from $250,000 to $10 million.

Highlights include:

  • Small businesses reported increased positivity relative to Nevada’s economy, with over half (53.8%) believing that Nevada’s economy is headed in the right direction, more than a 10% increase from 43.1% in 2022.
  • Housing affordability is expected to remain a concern for small businesses amid high and rising interest rates. Roughly 40.0% are very concerned about housing affordability and 28.5% are moderately concerned.
  • Over the past year, 42.7% of small businesses reported flat business revenues, while 41.4% reported unchanged profitability, a notable change from the prior year’s reports of rising revenues and profits.
  • Hiring and retaining quality workers is among the most important challenges that small businesses face. While cost of business, economy, competition, and legislation are clearly challenges—a significant 23.7% consider hiring/retaining qualified employees their single most important challenge.
  • More than 23.6% of respondents plan to expand their workspace, add a new building or renovate their current location in the next year. This is up 2% from 2022 and a historical high.
  • Education funding, increasing affordable housing, and increasing funding for infrastructure are top priorities for small businesses in Nevada’s 2023 legislative session.

This commentary is written by PNC Chief Economist Gus Faucher.

  • The FOMC raised the fed funds rate about 25 basis points, as expected.
  • The statement noted said the bank system is “sound and resilient,” which acknowledging recent problems.
  • PNC expects the FOMC to raise the fed funds rate by another 25 basis points at its early-May meeting.
  • PNC also expects a mild recession starting in the second half of this year.
  • The dot plot was little changed from December, although expected growth next year was lower.

The Federal Open Market Committee raised the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a range of 4.75% to 5.00%. The statement also said that “some additional policy firming may be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficient restricted to return inflation to 2% over time,” indicating that further near-term rate hikes are likely.

There had been some uncertainty as to whether the FOMC would raise the fed funds rate or keep it unchanged because of recent concerns about the stability of the banking system. The FOMC statement called the U.S. banking system “strong and resilient.” The statement also said that these banking problems are likely to result in tighter credit conditions, but the extent of the impact is unknown. The statement reiterated that the FOMC “remains highly attentive to inflation risks.”

Today’s FOMC announcement was largely as expected. After tightening monetary policy very aggressively in 2022 to combat inflation well above the 2% objective, the FOMC has been less aggressive in 2023. The rapid increases in interest rates has contributed to the recent failures of three banks. But concern about the financial system did not deter the FOMC from raising the fed funds rate, although by only one-quarter of a percentage point. Before the bank failures earlier this month, fed funds futures markets had been pricing in a 50 basis point rate increase.

Committee members remain concerned that letting up on rate hikes now could result in inflation persistently above 2% over the next few years, which would require even more tightening in monetary policy over the longer run. The FOMC appears to think that it has the tools to both cool inflation with higher rates and support financial system stability.

PNC expects the FOMC to raise the federal funds rate by 25 basis points at its next meeting, on May 3, and then maintain the rate in a range of 5.00% to 5.25% as it becomes more apparent that economic growth is slowing and inflation is receding. Given the lagged impact of the ongoing tightening cycle, including the problems in the banking system, PNC expects a mild recession starting in the second half of 2023.

In its discussion of current economic conditions, the statement noted modest economic growth, a strong labor market, and high inflation.

The statement was approved unanimously.

This meeting also included the release of the Summary of Economic Projections, or “dot plot,” which shows FOMC participants’ expectations for the outlook. The median participant expects the fed funds rate to be 5.1% at the end of this year, the same as in the previous projections, from December. But the median projection for the fed funds rate at the end of 2024 is now 4.3%, up from 4.1% in December. The outlooks for inflation and the unemployment rate over the next few years are little changed from December. But the median projection for GDP growth in 2024 has been moved lower, to 1.2%, from 1.6% in the previous dot plot.

During President Rodrigo Duterte’s “Talk to the People” Wednesday evening, MMDA Chairman Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. said the mayors have met with representatives of some of the country’s largest companies in preparation for the arrival of more vaccines.

“McDonald’s, Jollibee, Ayala Land, lahat ng malalaking korporasyon — tutulong po sila para po paghandaan po natin ‘yong pagdating ng bakuna (all major corporations — they will help prepare for the arrival of vaccines),” Abalos said.

He said the country is expecting to receive around 10 to 15 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines every month from June to August.

“Itong Abril is about 100,000 — 150,000, tapos comparing it to 10 million. So, iba ho talaga ang kailangang paghandaan (This April there is about 100,000 to 150,000 compared to 10 million. So, what we’re preparing for is very different),” Abalos said.

Meanwhile, he said NCR mayors have agreed to the extension of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).

He said the infection has gone down and is not expected to increase as the enforcement of minimum health protocols and the borders of NCR Plus — Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, and Laguna — will remain strict.

“So, sa Kalakhang Maynila more or less maganda po ang takbo. Ang mga alkalde po ay iisa lamang ang boses, ke maliit na lugar kamukha ng Pateros, San Juan o Mandaluyong; o malaking lugar, Maynila o Quezon City, basta magbotohan po, iisa lang po ang galaw po rito (So, in Metro Manila, more or less, things are going well. Our mayors have one voice, doesn’t matter if it’s a small place like Pateros, San Juan, or Mandaluyong; or a big place like Manila or Quezon City; if there’s a vote, there will be a unified action),” Abalos said.

Earlier, Duterte announced the extension of the MECQ in NCR Plus until May 14 based on the recommendation of health experts.

In addition, Santiago City in Quirino province and the province of Abra are also placed under MECQ for the whole month of May. (MNS)

500,000 More Doses of Sinovac COVID&19 Vaccine Arrive in Philippines https://philippine-times.com/500000-more-doses-of-sinovac-covid-19-vaccine-arrive-in-philippines https://philippine-times.com/500000-more-doses-of-sinovac-covid-19-vaccine-arrive-in-philippines MANILA, Apr 29 (Mabuhay) — A total of 500,000 more doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech arrived in the country on Thursday morning, according to Ian Cruz’s report on Unang Balita.

It was the sixth batch of Sinovac vaccine doses delivered to the Philippines. The fifth batch, composed also of 500,000 doses, arrived on April 22.

The latest batch was among the vaccines purchased by the Philippine government, the report said. It arrived via a chartered Cebu Pacific flight from China.

All in all, the country has received 3.5 million doses of Sinovac vaccine called CoronaVac, including those donated by the Chinese government.

The latest batch underwent disinfection after arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It will be brought to a storage facility in Marikina City.

Based on Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evaluation of Sinovac’s vaccine, it has the following efficacy rates:

65% to 91% among healthy individuals aged 18 to 59,
50.4% for health workers, and
51% to 52% on senior citizens or those aged 60 and above
Sinovac’s vaccine is given in two doses.

According to Department of Health’s tally, the country has 1,020,495 COVID-19 cases as of April 28, of which 67,769 are considered “active” cases.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries was at 935,695 and the death toll at 17,031 as of April 28.

The Philippines officially rolled out its vaccination program on March 1 but it has been hampered by supply problems.

Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Wednesday night said the Philippines is eyeing to start the vaccination of the general public by August. So far, only frontline health workers, senior citizens and persons with comorbidities have been vaccinated. (MNS)

Solon suggests targeted home vaccination for PWDs, elderly https://philippine-times.com/solon-suggests-targeted-home-vaccination-for-pwds-elderly https://philippine-times.com/solon-suggests-targeted-home-vaccination-for-pwds-elderly MANILA, Apr 29 (Mabuhay) —
Senior Citizens party-list Representative Rodolfo Ordanes is pushing for house-to-house vaccination for persons with disability and senior citizens aged 70 and above, but he said it does not necessarily have to be done on a large scale basis.

In a press statement issued Thursday, Ordanes said the present conditions and variables are still not conducive for proper large scale implementation of the house-to-house vaccination.

“For now, the house-to-house tactics can be done on a targeted basis by concentrating efforts of specific areas where the spread has been high or quite difficult,” Ordanes said, noting that he had written to Metro Manila mayors regarding the matter.

“The COVID spread is like a major fire, so some firefighting tactics would be useful. Target the larger clusters and create a firewall. Isolate and contain specific areas,” he added.

According to the lawmaker, local government units have to allocate some ample resources to make the house-to-house inoculation happen on a targeted basis.

As early as January, the Department of Health already considered the possibility of conducting house-to-house vaccination for vulnerable and high-risk senior citizens.

In Taguig City, home service vaccination is already being offered to bedridden residents.

Meanwhile, the DOH said a total of 246,986 individuals are already fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 as of April 27.

A total of 1,809,801 doses have been administered at 3,415 vaccination sites across the country. (MNS)

Nevada counties open to 100 percent capacity by June 1. https://philippine-times.com/nevada-counties-open-to-100-percent-capacity-by-june-1 https://philippine-times.com/nevada-counties-open-to-100-percent-capacity-by-june-1 Covid 19 Mitigation measures transferred to local authority on May 1

In an effort to help meet that goal, Governor Sisolak announced that the statewide social distancing mandate was removed on May 1 and that decisions on social distancing will transition to local authority in accordance with the Roadmap to Recovery timeline that was previously announced.

“Across Nevada great strides have been made in our response to COVID-19 to strengthen our partnerships, build capacity within our public health infrastructure, and vaccinate Nevadans,” said Governor Sisolak. “It’s because of this progress that I am proud to announce the goal of having every county in Nevada reopen to 100 percent on June 1. I am confident that if Nevadans continue to remain vigilant as more and more people get vaccinated, we can accomplish this together.”

COVID-19 mitigation measures will transfer to local authority starting May 1 and each Nevada county has been working with the COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force to finalize plans for this transition.

As a result of this transition to local authority, each county will be able to make decisions based on what is best for their communities while taking into account transmission of the virus, vaccination, testing and other infrastructure needs specific to their communities.

Under the Governor’s plan, the Gaming Control Board will continue to maintain authority over gaming areas of licensed properties in Nevada and decisions related to mitigation measures in Nevada schools will transition to school districts.

While the State will be transitioning authority over social distancing measures to the counties, the mask mandate will remain in effect statewide.

For more than a year, local governments, state health officials, emergency managers, local health authorities and community partners have come together in a statewide response to COVID-19. Processes are now in place to support testing, contact tracing, disease investigation and vaccine rollout in communities across Nevada.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board will continue to maintain authority over gaming institutions, Sisolak said, throughout the state.

He emphasized that the planned timeline will require Nevadans to continue to get vaccinated and continue wearing a mask. The statewide mask mandate will remain in place through the transition, he said.

“But public health officials made it clear that in order to reach our goal of reopening on June 1, we must make sure Nevadans stay masked. It would be irresponsible for me as your Governor to ignore that advice. Additionally, it’s a common sense bargain – if we all continue to wear masks, it will help ensure we can reopen our state by June 1,” Sisolak said.

Cassava Suman https://philippine-times.com/cassava-suman https://philippine-times.com/cassava-suman My childhood merienda was never processed junk food like cheese curls, chippy or fast food burgers and fries. It was old fashioned cassava, camote or banana delicacies.

In Bicol, we have the balisoso which are heart shaped banana covered munchies made of malagkit rice or cassava. I was thinking of doing cassava balisoso but I ran out of banana leaves . Instead, I did a suman like cassava. Same content, different outer wrapper form.

If you have any special request, please email me at Vic @philtimes.net. Enjoy!

Ingredients

2 packs of frozen  grated cassava cake

1 cup of coconut cream

2 cups of brown sugar

Recipe

Prepare banana leaves by cutting them in pieces and warming them on stove open fire. Wipe each piece after warming each side.

Mix all ingredients and scoop 1/4 cup of cassava mix and spread it  on the leaf like  a cylindrical.shape.

Roll the mix with banana leaf and fold the tips.

Steam in a Saladmaster wok for 30 minutes.

Whatever you are, I’ll accept,’ Kris tells son Bimby on gender orientation https://philippine-times.com/whatever-you-are-ill-accept-kris-tells-son-bimby-on-gender-orientation https://philippine-times.com/whatever-you-are-ill-accept-kris-tells-son-bimby-on-gender-orientation In a heart-to-heart conversation released as an interview on Friday, actress-host Kris Aquino assured her son, 14-year-old Bimby, that she accepts him regardless of his gender identity.

The video, released through Aquino’s Facebook page, is the second of two parts where the celebrity mother and son exchanged seven questions each, in light of Bimby turning 14 recently.

“How do you feel, honestly, when you read those comments and they say you’re gay?” Aquino asked her son for her first of seven questions.

Bimby, who was seated across his mother, answered: “Wala, I don’t really feel anything. If you think I’m gay, alright. But you do realize that the gay community sa Philippines is a strong community. And you do realize that I’m 14.”

“I know what I am. I’m straight as an arrow,” he said.

“Are you sure?” Aquino clarified.

“Yes,” Bimby answered.

“I want to bring this out also,” Aquino told her son. “Whatever you are, I’ll accept. I really don’t care, honestly. Whatever you choose to be, it will be fine with me for as long as you excel. Whatever you’re going to be, you better be the best at the profession you choose.”

Born to celebrity parents — Aquino is dubbed local showbiz’s “Queen of All Media,” while his father, basketball player James Yap, is a superstar of the sport — Bimby has grown up before the public eye.

In Aquino’s custody after the separation of his parents, Bimby would often appear alongside his mother in her TV programs, and now, her digital shows. He has also starred in three movies.

In March, Aquino called out “homophobic attitudes” of her detractors, in response to comments about Bimby’s sexual orientation.

“I know my son doesn’t identify as being gay, but in the event he ever does, he will still be my son. The bullying you are doing is a reflection of your homophobic attitudes that are no longer welcome in 2021,” Aquino said at the time.

Aquino, in her conversation with Bimby, also asked her son whether he has “questioned” himself, on the topic of gender.

“No, not at all,” Bimby answered.

Turning to face the camera, as prompted by his mother, Bimby emphasized: “Here, I’ll set the record straight. I’m straight. I like women. I don’t like boys.”

Aquino then told him, “You know, Bimb, whatever you choose to be, it’s none of their business.” (MNS)

Sarah Lahbati teases husband Richard Gutierrez for another baby https://philippine-times.com/sarah-lahbati-teases-husband-richard-gutierrez-for-another-baby https://philippine-times.com/sarah-lahbati-teases-husband-richard-gutierrez-for-another-baby — Netizen swooned after Richard Gutierrez penned a sweet message for his wife Sarah Lahbati.

On his Instagram account, Gutierrez revealed that he still has a crush on Lahbati.

“Still crushing on you, even though we’re together, married, and have two kids,” Gutierrez said.

But it appears that Lahbati’s reply won the hearts of some netizens as she teased her husband for a third baby.

“baby #3. Just kiddinggggggg i love you,” she replied to Gutierrez’s post.

Netizens quickly responded to Lahbati’s message, saying they also hope for a baby girl for the celebrity couple.

The couple have two children, Zion and Kai.

Last March, Gutierrez and Lahbati marked their first wedding anniversary. The couple, who got engaged in 2017, decided to push through with their intimate wedding last year amid concerns about COVID-19.

Lahbati also opened up about her relationship with her feisty mother-in-law, Annabelle Rama, from whom she has learned how to be patient.

While admitting that Rama can sometimes be loud, Lahbati revealed that her mother-in-law is also generous and thoughtful.

Currently, Gutierrez is part of ABS-CBN’s hit series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.” (MNS)

For these special performances, Styx – James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals) – has created an exclusive set list and brand new stage production.

The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits, joyous singalongs and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion,” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man.” From the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady,” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America.” From an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness,” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball.” From the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away,” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound.

Styx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s Crystal Ball, and then they become the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979) and Paradise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour that was expertly documented on both CD and DVD in 1997. With a little help from their many friends in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra, One With Everything (2006) became a hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. And on The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live (2011), the band performed at its peak when tackling every track from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums back to back. Not only that, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic material with much finesse and musculature, aptly known as Regeneration Volume I & II (2011 & 2012).

After 14 years, Styx’s sonically sweet 16th studio album and its most ambitious, most challenging and most rewarding album to date, The Mission, was finally released June 16, 2017 on the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe. The highly anticipated two-disc reissue of The Mission was released on July 27, 2018 via Alpha Dog 2T/UMe, which includes a CD of the original album, as well as a Blu-ray of The Mission mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound accompanied by stunning visualizations for each of the album’s 14 songs based on the album artwork.

After more than a decade together on the road, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can.

This week, about 50 students in the Jobs for Nevada’s Graduates (J4NG) program visited Carson City to learn about civic engagement and leadership. J4NG is an education-based nonprofit organization that aims to help all students, particularly vulnerable students, to achieve graduation and be ready to enter careers or college pathways after high school. The program serves more than 3,300 students statewide.

Students did a tour of the Capitol Building and Nevada Supreme Court, met with elected officials, and sat on the Assembly and Senate Floors. The students ended the day with a meet and greet with Governor Joe Lombardo.

J4NG hosts Legislative Day every other year during the Nevada State Legislative Session, giving students the opportunity to engage with elected officials, ask questions, learn about local government and the impact of civic engagement, and talk to legislators about the J4NG program.

“(J4NG) has honestly taught me to be the person I am today, and I wouldn't be as successful as I am today without this program,” says Skyler Dodd-Bailor, J4NG Student Damonte Ranch High School. ”What I'm thankful about today at the Legislative Building is meeting all of these great congresspeople, the assemblymen, senators, and learning why they're doing what they do.”

Nevada Employment Exceeds 1.5 Million Jobs, January Unemployment Rate 5.5% https://philippine-times.com/nevada-employment-exceeds-15-million-jobs-january-unemployment-rate-55 https://philippine-times.com/nevada-employment-exceeds-15-million-jobs-january-unemployment-rate-55

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s January 2023 report, the total number of jobs in Nevada has passed 1.5 million jobs, up 6% year over year. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged from December 2022 to January 2023, sitting at 5.5%. This is the highest unemployment rate of any state.

The year-over-year employment growth reflects a continued trend in Nevada of more individuals entering the labor force, thus leading to higher employment and unemployment numbers. The state’s labor force participation rate over the year stayed quite steady over 2022 even as unemployment rose.

Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Employment (Seasonally Adjusted):

  • Las Vegas employment increased by 4,000 jobs (0.4%) since December, an increase of 62,600 jobs (6.0%) since January 2022.
  • Reno employment had an increase of 800 jobs (0.3%) since December, an increase of 11,900 jobs (4.6%) since January 2022.
  • Carson City employment had an increase of 100 jobs (0.3%) since December, an increase of 1,200 jobs (3.9%) since January 2022.

“This report shows Nevada has recovered from the COVID recession and is continuing to add jobs at a brisk pace. Except for the leisure and hospitality industry, every sector of our economy employs more people than before the pandemic, and every single industry is showing growth over the past year. Our unemployment rate is high as is the total number of job openings in the state, reflecting an ongoing tight labor market,” said David Schmidt, Chief Economist.

Yesterday, the Las Vegas City Council approved the HOME-ARP Allocation Plan (the plan) to fund development of affordable rental housing and for supportive services. As part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the City of Las Vegas has been awarded $8,289,072 of HOME-ARP funds to address the need for homelessness assistance. The city will submit the plan to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) before March 31, 2023. HOME-ARP funds are a one-time allocation and must be spent by September 30, 2030 upon final approval by HUD.

Reports show that Las Vegas needs more affordable housing, especially for extremly low income population. According to National Low Income Housing Coalition’s report “The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes”, the supply of affordable and available rental homes was 18 for every 100 extremely low-income renter households in Nevada.

According to the 2022 Annual Housing Report published by the Nevada Housing Division, the number of public or subsidized affordable units to households at 50% AMI (area median income) and below in the City of Las Vegas was just 13% of the existing need for subsidized units. Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) data shows 45,125 very low-income households are in need of affordable housing. However, as of December 2022, City of Las Vegas only has 6,025 existing units for households at 50% AMI and below.

The City will advertise a Request for Proposal process to seek developers and qualified non-profit organizations to carry out the identified HOME-ARP activities.

  • Retail sales were down 0.4% in February, but the details were better. Sales growth was mixed across segments.
  • January’s big increase was revised higher, and retail sales are up from late 2022. The very strong labor market is the primary driver of rising retail sales.
  • Consumer spending is set to fall later this year as the U.S. economy enters recession.

Retail sales fell 0.4% in February from January. The details were somewhat better, however; sales excluding autos were down 0.1%, and sales excluding autos and gasoline were flat over the month. Sales growth was mixed across segments.

January’s huge increase was revised even higher, to a 3.2% gain, from the initially reported 3.0% increase. And the decline in sales in December was revised to a 0.8% drop, from a 1.1% fall.

Control sales—sales excluding food services, autos, gasoline, and building materials, and which go into nominal consumer spending in GDP—rose a solid 0.5% in February, after increasing 2.5% in January.

Although retail sales were down in February, they are still up from late 2022. A number of factors are driving continued strong nominal consumer spending, in particular the very strong job market, price increases, and the high level of household saving. These are offsetting the drags from a shift in consumer spending away from goods toward services, higher interest rates, prices that are increasing more rapidly than wages, and a loss of household wealth from falling home values and stock prices. Retail sales are set to decline later this year as the U.S. economy enters recession and a deteriorating labor market pushes households to cut back.

Sales of motor vehicles and parts fell 1.8% in February as high interest rates and continued supply-chain issues weighed on auto sales. The ongoing contraction in the housing market pushed sales of furniture and home furnishings down by 2.5% over the month, while sales of building materials fell 0.1%. Sales at gasoline stations fell 0.6% because of lower prices. Sales at restaurants declined 2.2% following an oversized gain of 5.6% in January, and sales were also down for clothing and specialty stores. On the positive side, sales of general merchandise rose 0.5%, sales of nonstore retailers (primarily online) rose 1.8%, and grocery store sales rose 0.5%.

According to a report released by Las Vegas REALTORS® (LVR), local home prices leveled off in February 2023, with more homes available for sale and fewer changing hands than one year ago.

The median price of existing single-family homes sold in Southern Nevada through LVR’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) during February was $424,995, down 5.6% from one year ago. By the end of February, LVR reported 4,665 single-family homes listed for sale without any offer, up 167.9% from the same time last year.

The sales pace in February equates to nearly a three-month supply of properties available for sale. In February, 61.0% of all existing local homes sold within 60 days. In comparison, 88.6% of all existing local homes sold within 60 years the same time last year.

During February, 27.1% of all local property sales were purchased with cash, down from 30% one year ago. For distressed sales, short sales and foreclosures combined accounted for 1.2% of all existing local property sales in February.
