Aboitiz Power: Tiwi plant operations remain normal

ENERGY firm Aboitiz Power Corp. said on Thursday that its Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant in Tiwi, Albay continued to operate under normal conditions and was supplying the Luzon grid despite Mayon Volcano’s restiveness.

In a statement, Aboitiz Power Renewables Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Estrella said that the facility had observed no significant temperature and fluid flow effects or other issues.

“The complex’s gross generation for the past week has been around 120 megawatts (MW), with no incident relating to Mayon’s unrest,” Estrella added.

“Nonetheless, despite Tiwi Geothermal’s distance to Mayon’s crater of about 24 kilometers, we remain on safety alert for any possible eventualities.”

The Aboitiz group of companies has been helping in relief efforts for residents affected by Mayon’s unrest. Its social development arm, Aboitiz Foundation Inc., has donated 10,000 five-kilogram sacks of rice to evacuees.

The province of Albay has been placed under a state of calamity due to the threat of a volcanic eruption as Mayon remains under Alert Level 3.

More than 5,800 affected families, or around 20,000 individuals, from six municipalities and two component cities who are living within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone have been evacuated.

As part of its push for renewable energy, Aboitiz Power said that construction of a binary geothermal plant at the Tiwi facility was on track to provide an additional 17 MW of clean electricity by the end of this year.

Aboitiz Power shares closed up P1 at P37.50 on Thursday.
